Our mission

Museo della terra of Latera – objects, customs and stories of rural life

The Museo della terra lies, both physically and symbolically, at the foot of the town and serves as a meeting point for the people of Latera where they can gather, discover, rediscover and get to know themselves and each other better. A place to remember the past, reflect on the present and look to the future with more awareness. Not only a place to archive, preserve and enhance the past, but also a center able to actively engage with the territory and critically confront the realities, interests and necessities of modern society.

The museum’s main objectives are:

  • – enriching the local community by nurturing the relationship with its historical, cultural and economical heritage and its cultural and working identity and salvaging some of the aspects that are still functional by preserving its creativity, knowledge and skills;
  • – cultural restitution obtained by reflecting on the cultural identity of the local community while preserving and enhancing its peculiarities;
  • building a relationship with the territory by promoting the museum as a place for the citizens to socialize and engage, especially with people from different generations;
  • – spreading knowledge of the territory to other areas.

The museum has been working towards these goals through a series of actions:

  • preserving and valorizing the Poscia collection and the intangible heritage that makes up the museum’s installment through the expansion of digital archives about the assets, and by promoting the involvement of schools, academies, universities, master’s degrees and postgraduate students in cultural heritage and demoethnoantropology;
  • management style that focuses on public service (reception, hospitality, information, divulgation, feedback);
  • training and didactic activities including multimedia and artisanal workshops with young people and seniors, and diversified meetings for people of all ages, for locals and outsiders alike;
  • returning the museum grounds to the town by involving local institutions and organizations, private and public, to manage the orchard and vegetable garden and organize guided tours, recreational events and cultural events;
  • promoting temporary exhibitions, seminars, conferences and cultural events;
  • creating partnerships with both private and public entities to enhance the tourist value of the local assets through a series of different ventures.
